Adams had our number in “Democracy” and “ The Education.” James and Adams were longtime friends and pulled no punches—hence James’s candid assessment. “Democracy” was very much a C19 literary realist work. I can’t recall Howells’s reviewing it, but surely he did. Also, doubtless, Gore Vidal’s “Lincoln” and “1876” owe something to Adams.
