I was starting to think that my fairy godmother lived on a street close by and that she was leaving copies of Anne Tyler's books in the local phone box library. However, I walked past this evening, when I had two chapters left of Earthly Possessions, and there was nothing to be had.
Like A Patchwork Planet this has a great opening: a woman who is leaving her husband goes to the bank to get some money out and ends up getting mixed up a robbery and being kidnapped . She's wonderfully good at making undramatic conclusions that take you by surprise, something I appreciated much more in this one. It's also a short read, which is an under rated quality of good books.
Samuel Johnson said, 'A book may be good for nothing; or there may be only one thing in it worth knowing; are we to read it all through?' Somehow I keep reading Anne Tyler all the way through.
I'll keep you posted on the three I ordered from Amazon when I got home...
