Henry, perhaps you could do a post on great rom-coms sometime? When done well, it is perhaps my favorite genre. But it is soooooo rarely done well. Would love to know your top recommendations. Metropolitan, Four Weddings and a Funeral, High Fidelity, and of course, Pride and Prejudice (2005) would certainly be on my list. When Harry Met Sally is a model of writerly and directorial craft but did not hold up for me as well as expected when I rewatched recently. Characterization is thin, stakes low, and the whole thing too derivative of Woody Allen, with rough edges sanded off.
The 30s and 40s were the age of the greatest rom-coms. Try some of: Easy Living, The More the Merrier, Holiday, The Lady Eve, The Awful Truth, and Shop Around the Corner.
Also, the 1995 Pride and Prejudice mini-series is better than the 2005 film.
1980 Fay Weldon version of Pride and Prejudice is even better. Between 1937 and 1940: The Awful Truth, Bringing Up Baby, Holiday (happy to see it on your short list), His Girl Friday, Philadelphia Story. Insane. Plus several others, including two of the greatest "adventure" films ever: Only Angels Have Wings and Gunga Din.
Thomas Hardy would have titled the film as "The Return of the Naive", making Owen's quest sound less like a fun college comedy and more like an inevitable march toward a reality check. he would have likely walked out of the theater.
I will certainly watch it. But I am afraid academia has systematically destroyed the study of literature. Substituting Mrs McFlannel for Emily Dickenson forsooth
I watched this movie 3 days back. Loved the videography, soundtrack and happy jolly rom com vibes it was giving. The part where they showed both the characters overcoming or healing in their own ways. I wanted to see more of that. Ending was predictable but yeahh overall a great one time watch <333
Converting your own feelings into a theory is the most respectable way to avoid them. It works well enough to build a career on. The theory is usually accurate too, which is what makes it so hard to catch, and when it eventually gives way the person is left holding a feeling they have no language for. Then they need the poems.
This is such a beautiful review, I'm almost afraid to see the movie.
