Congratulations! I'm sure they'll be the better for your joining them. Whether you'll be the better is less clear to me. You're too well-read and well-grounded for me to pull a "'tis new to thee," but I suspect things are darker than you suppose: references to culture wars or polarization are so hackneyed, generic, and anemic as to constitute a form of evasion. There are plenty of brilliant and thoughtful people, and I have no doubt you will be stimulated and challenged, but I see precious few signs that people are willing to go beyond brilliant and thoughtful to do the much harder work of seeing things-- including themselves-- as they actually are.
I must confess that I had to do a triple take as I recently followed you for literature and history reasons, and clearly need to read more of your work.
I used to work at Mercatus (marketing for one of their education programs) and am an econ nerd. My main research interest is in the economic, cultural, and institutional groundwork laid in the high to late medieval era that set the stage for the birth of liberalism. I'm early in the PhD prep stage as a late-comer to academia though.
The Substack algorithm is doing something right! I look forward to reading more, and any updates you share about the fellowship research—it sounds fascinating.
Safe travels and brace yourself for the Virginia summer.
This is amazing. I'm happy for you, but absolutely thrilled for the students and all of us who will get to read more and think more about this as a result.
Welcome to the US!!! This sounds very exciting. I grew up in northern Virginia - it’s a great area - be sure to visit the gardens and museum at Dumbarton Oaks!!! But it sure is hot and humid!!! All the best!!!
How exciting! I hope you'll also tell us about life in the US – it would be great to have a little window on to your new life there and how it compares to life here. Good luck!
Gosh, I'm delighted for you! You'll have an amazing time. The Americans need you, Henry, and your enlightened mind and your love of Shakespeare. It's a noble calling. I see your work will be "about literature and the pursuit of happiness"? What a gig! Go for it.
Congrats! Hope you enjoy the many delights of America: small town diners, vertiginously beautiful nature, gigantic freeway rest stops, baseball games, etc. If you find yourself in Los Angeles at some point hit me up.
great news!
Thanks!
Congratulations Henry! I look forward to crossing paths with you here in the US!
yay we must do things together!
I had the same thought.
