I am going to pre-order your book because I am curious. I am, however, a sceptic about second acts. I think most career changers have some kind of capital advantage (especially either financial or social) that enables them to make the jump and that isn't available to everyone. As a result, for many people a later-in-life career shift is nothing more than a pipe dream. That being said, I also have an open mind so will go into your book prepared to be convinced otherwise if the evidence supports it!
Absolutely, it is why I said financial or social as the two biggest. I have known a lot of people in my line of work who has easily gone on to a different career due primarily to their social capital, with deep roots in their parents lives, along with their school (mostly private) and university (invariably Oxbridge). Even the financial capital doesn't have to mean having lots of money in the bank. Some of the most successful career shifters I know were able to do so because their spouse had a high paying job and their household could therefore cover the shortfall of income.
Henry, would be willing to share digital galleys for me to review the book on my publication? I can time it however you would like with enough time. My next book has a section on career change and the difficulty of Second Acts like my own. Happy to help. LMK - james@socialawarenessinstitute.org
Do you think that is annual peak book launch day! They'll be queuing the launch parties at Hatchards, one every ten minutes, half a glass of prosecco and out the back door
I'm a "second-act" person (as was my mother) so I'm looking forward to this book very much. (At 61, I like the bright light of my computer to illuminate the large print on a Kindle so that's why I ordered the Kindle version)

You will find the Audrey Sutherland chapter interesting, I think. Agree that various forms of capital are important, though not only financial.

Sounds great. I changed careers in my mid forties - it was really hard, but the best ting I've ever done.
Cool!
One of these days I'll 'stack about it....
Yes do!
