The rusted old water tower that glowed bronze in the sunset is the image I shall remember of Milwaukee. On the highway that curves above the river—a road on the sort of angle you usually associate with video games—you get the best view of the city, the clock that is larger than Big Ben, and the buildings of the financial district. Mostly driving through the town is a drab experience. The roads are so bad I finally understand the jokes in the Simpsons about potholes like craters. People blame the weather, the salt and grit, the libertarian mindset. There is something lovely about the glow of the rusted water tank, depressing as the deindustrialised aura of the town is.
Of all the things you have written, I think this is my favourite. It captures well some of the thoughts I’ve had about living in America for almost a year. The sense of dislocation and disorientation has remained since we arrived .
I can’t say that I’ve seen much of it. We’ve been living here without a car and we had no idea how car-dependent this place this. I think reading Randy Boyagoda’s great new novel ‘Dante’s Indiana’ will give you a sense of what the state is like.
Did you go to the Milwaukee Art Museum? I loved it. And the Pfister Hotel seems nice (old, traditional). I'm from Chicago originally and grew up very close to Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes feel so magical to me. Have fun!
Very nice! Madison is supposed to be a great place to live. I'm glad you had some really good cheese, since as you undoubtedly know, you're in The Dairy State.

Thank you. Whereabouts do you live?
South Bend Indiana.
Never been to Indiana what’s it like

The car thing is crazy. I couldn’t believe it either

Sadly not. Spent my time visiting Frank Lloyd Wright museums. I made it to the Madison art museum and saw a grandma Moses though!

It was a lovely town and quite busy considering its size
