"Clown and Lord of Misrule" --such an apt phrase for this marvel of a character. Ah, Falstaff and, ah, Henry Oliver, who clarifies literature and takes us back and forward and illuminates.
A favourite recent rendition of Falstaff for me was in The Globe production with Roger Allam; over a decade ago now i think. He and Jamie Parker made a terrific combination, each bringing out the best in each other.
Such a huge character, in every sense. Unforgettable when done well on stage. I love what Orson Welles did with him in Chimes at Midnight.

“for the purpose of this index Falstaff shall be referred to as a work.” this is INCREDIBLE. I cannot believe I lived my life without this knowledge.
I know right. I learned that quite recently and I was so pleased.
I dont know why my brain produced this thought but I thought: "so he's shakespeare's mickey mouse"
