Thanks for this Henry - lapped up this information. I really wish I was studying Emma at Uni - it’s my favourite Austen novel. I’m glad though that I will have the opportunity to study 2 of her others, so I shouldn’t complain. I will look forward to focusing on FIS in the hands of the maestro!!

Just do it anyway it’s the most important one and will help you understand the others

I will do that! I studied it for A Level Eng Lit and loved it.

I read Emma a couple of months ago and happened on this article today. Really enlightening. I was blown away by Emma by the way. I am very curious to know if Hatsuyo Shimazaki is a native English speaker or if her insights might have come from her perspective as a Japanese speaker. Conversational Japanese typically dispenses with pronouns and frequently one can identify the speaker in text purely by the context of the speech and the hierarchical and male and female nuances. Thus, "he said, she said" ends up being redundant in dialog.

Always here for a shout-out to Burney! So underappreciated.
