The Jane Gardam story is 'The latter days of Mr. Jones', which is in the collection "The People on privilege Hill", a good collection generally. I slightly misremembered the details, but it's still relevant to our discussion on Carroll.

And this strikes me as useful question that is relevant almost anytime-anywhere:

"What sort of insects do you rejoice in, where you come from?"

Yes! I would very much like to fly hanging onto the red queen...but maybe I already do. That's TV or video games or email. Carroll was seeing the future as best he could.

We could also play Animal Vegetable Mineral.. I didn't realize that Animal Vegetable Mineral was a popular Victorian era parlor game until reading this Annotated. The game gets played a lot at our house going back years.

Just found the German translation of Jabberwocky - very interesting for anyone who knows German. My favorite line is an inspired bit of wordplay that only works in German: the word "an-zu-denken-fing."

I recommend the documentary "In the Realms of the Unreal" - outsider artist Henry Darger has something in common with Carroll's weirdness (dialed up to 11).

All this nonsense has been delightful! I read Carroll growing up (and upon revisiting it, I may have been more influenced than I realized) but Edward Lear was new to me.

I appreciated this unassailable morsel of logic from a Little Girl in the notes: "I'm so glad I don't like asparagus. Because if I did like it, I should have to eat it -- and I can't bear it!"

Do you record these meetings or provide a transcript? My hearing aids and computer headset don't always get along.

I make a shorter video with the key points and do a write up--the recording would be rather long and disparate.

Will your slides be included? I was writing like mad, but I'm sure I missed some details while trying to listen at the same time.
