I discovered Ruth Scurr when I was in Paris several years ago. An exhibition at the Concierge prompted me to find something in English to read about the revolution. I picked up, after a check on the net for the latest publication in English of something a tourist might read , Ruth Scurr, Fatal Purity. Ever since I check to see if she has written anything else.
Fatal Purity brought to life the streets where I walked. I was staying in Rue de Turbigo, 3rd arrondissement. I also enjoyed the story about white stockings being an adequate replacement addressed to Robespierre in a box of requirements for a particular sausage.
I loved John Aubrey. I am at that stage in life when I think do I dispose to the second hand market or itemise for someone to inherit. Such a bold experiment that connected me to DNA, said to have memory, was remarkable reading experience. I could smell the scenes from time to time, feel the sweaty unwashed skin. Not sure about the food. And the dreadfully cruel school master of French ( or was it Latin?) who caused the stutter and the disbelief in oneself.
I assumed the first person to discover circulating blood was Leonardo da Vinci. Until Claire Tomalin wrote an ace biography of Ellen Ternan the Dickens Museum kept her a secret. If Ms Scurr does write about the arch hypocrite Rousseau I hope she talks about his devoted illiterate mistress who was devastated when he removed all their babies from her at birth and stuck them in an orphanage despite his close friends wanting to adopt them. He was a monster. Certainly no role model for living a good life. He was appointed a tutor in Chateau Chenonceau near me.
