My very first London West End show was the 1987 Lettice and Loveage production with Maggie Smith and Judi Dench - no wonder I became hooked! She was truly a Great. šŸ’®

šŸ¤— Forever grateful to the British drama teacher who took a bunch of kids from the middle of America - mostly Alabama - to see that show.

Yeah that’s amazing

ā€œWhat is a week-end?ā€ has to be one of the best-delivered lines of all time

Henry Oliver's avatar

It’s the ā€œWh-whatā€ that does it

Another wonderful Maggie Smith line from Downton Abbey: "Why does every day involve a fight with an American?" - this is after she struggles to sit in a new-fangled swivel chair supposedly designed by Thomas Jefferson. 🤣

Miss Jean Brodie, on whom the bluestockings with a bit of closet bad girl modelled themselves. I adored her. Thank you for these glorious clips.

Rare example of a film matching a book imo

can't honestly say i know of a bad performance of hers. An immensely skilled and talented individual. and imbued with some magic x factor that's probably best remaining only partially understood. feel it'd be a bit like looking into the Ark of the Covenant or something. what a life

She never missed!

She was a classic. For me, she will always be Professor McGonagall.

i've had many fave actors over the years, but your enthusiasm for her in the wake of her passing eventually, ultimately persuaded me that Maggie Smith is, and will always be, among the first. thank you for that. such a light yet serious gift she had. but also, here's an extra clip of Smith in Lettice & Lovage, the first twenty or so minutes of the play filmed for the Tonys way back. not the greatest quality sadly, but still enough to enjoy her boundless genius. thanks again

Great, indeed; an incredible talent. Very sad for us, to lose someone like that.

I loved her too. One of a kind. I thought she was amazing in 'The Lady in the Van' and of course as Jean Brodie.

So many wonderful moments. One of my favorite performances is Maggie and Gosford Park.

She never faltered.
